PLEASE COMPLETE ALL THREE STEPS BELOW.
Let’s get to planning,

WHAT TO WEAR-
This can be the most stressful part of the whole gig! Our goal is to look like we belong in the same photo together BUT not match. Great ideas on style pinboards are located at the top of this page. Just scroll up and select your specific session type.
I prefer warm tones that coordinate. Pick one piece then piece the rest of the family together based off of that. Visit the ‘what to wear’ above for some visual references.
Looking like you belong in your surroundings is a huge part in a cohesive photo. If we are photographing your family in the mountains, great colors are neutrals, blues, greens, etc. You know, colors you see in those b-e-a-utiful mountains. Now, the look. A blue suite and tie, although I did say "blue" is definitely going to stand out like a sore thumb. Try matching your attire to the location for the most cohesive look. For the mountains layers and maybe a few patterns, for a park a simple sun dress. You get the point.
Picking the right outfits is a tricky task, if you need help or suggestions just give me a ring, I am here to help!
What to bring- Hats are always great accessories for sessions, also if you have a quilt/blanket that coordinates with your outfits throw that in too. I love to use quilts and blankets for some sitting shots.
WHERE TO GO-
Session location will be emailed to you prior to your session. If you have questions about location please contact me.
For Studio Sessions-
Our studio is located at 2702 Montana Ave (click for Google Maps link), just inside the Oliver Building.
Enter via the Montana Ave. door, then come up to the second floor. We are just off the elevator, look for Miranda Murdock Photography on the door, we share a studio. Ring Us: (406) 839-5246
Parking: Street and Garage parking are available. I suggest parking in the Northern Garage (2nd Floor at the corner of Montana and 27th) take the elevator down to the ground level and cross the cross walk and you’re here.
THE BIG DAY- There are just a few keys to a successful family session
I am a mom, I am the planner, I worry, I have an occasional Kate Gosslin moment or two. I am not perfect. What I will tell you from my own personal experience, the days I panic--- they don't photograph well. I will tell you I had a moment when we were getting our photos done Layla stuck her tongue out a crossed her eyes and I wanted to scream "DO NOT DO THAT" but I didn't, and the photos following with her and Calli laughing are priceless and the photographer thought it was hilarious.
Make photo day a YES day. I occasionally do my best to have "Yes days" with my kids. It's fun for them, they think I am the nicest human alive AND I get what I want when I do ask something of them. This works well for me on photo day for me, consider having your photo day a 'YES DAY!'
Food. I swear it's the magic ingredient. Well fed kids are happy, ready to play and have some fun and most importantly not hangry. I have had to call several sessions off with beautifully dressed kiddos because "Mom, I am starving." They hit that hypoglycemic-face-melting-stage and it's over. Everyone's a mess. Feed them, snack them, bring A SNACK. Then pack three more, you know they will need them. Snack ideas that won't get their outfit dirty- Apple slices, fruit snacks, string cheese, pretzels, raisins, etc.
Dad. Occasionally he isn't as excited about family photos as you are. I get it that. Brian has come a long way, he hasn't always known the value of it and how easy it actually is until he experienced it himself. Dad's occasionally won't be on your game plan for the session or may themselves need a little convincing. If there is one thing you could do for me it's to let everyone know, dad included, the session is fun. I will have you do fun things, walk together, tickle, play, smooch.... it will be fun, filled with lots of activities. If the kids get out of line-- it's okay. I still think your great parents and completely take full responsibility for the high energy levels and great photos. It will be quick, it will be fun, and I hope to knock your socks off with amazing images.
JUST FOR NEWBORNS- There are just a few keys to a successful newborn session
Keep the baby awake for 1-2 hours prior to your session.
Get in a good & long feeding before you leave. Plan and try to get the best feeding possible in right before you leave. After a bumpy car ride with a full belly babies are typically sacked out and ready to be photographed.
Dress baby in something warm that is easy to get out of, a zip sleeper is perfect!
Plan for extra feedings during the session! Babies get extra hungry when they are overstimulated, most babies have 1-4 feeding breaks during their session! Make sure to bring any nursing supplies you need (i.e. shield, pumped milk, etc.) if you are nursing and extra bottles if you are bottle feeding.
Consider this your warning, I keep the studio at 76 degrees (don't worry, your baby was just 98.6 degrees inside of you) during my newborn sessions. This allows baby to be nice and toasty without being held or swaddled and keeps them sleeping nicely. I would dress in light clothes and make sure dads do too. If we are using your home as our studio, please turn up the heat prior to me arriving.
Although I have a ton of baby props I always encourage each family to bring a newborn prop that fits their baby and they style/nursery to keep in their baby mementoes. Over the years clients have loved doing this and it’s so fun for kids to see how tiny they were as they grow up. I suggest a hat, headband, bow, or swaddle that fits the baby well and is neutral. **Tips: Bright and vibrant colors are not the best option for the babies skin right after birth. Make sure it fits the baby well and isn’t too big or small.
